Nick Verreos Project Runway Season 7 Recap: THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE EVER!!!!!

Did You Hear What The Challenge Was?Fashionista Tag Team: Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles and Tim Gunn

This week's Challenge on Season 7 Project Runway was "The Biggest One" in Project Runway HISTORY, and the reward would be UNPRECEDENTED. As Tim Gunn and Marie Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles explained, the winning design would be worn by none other than Miss Heidi Klum for the cover of the April issue of Marie Claire magazine. Canary Yellow is Good: Marie Claire Cover featuring Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page

That is, truly, a big reward. HUGE! pretty obvious--at least to me--what one would need to do to have your design on the cover of a magazine, but Fashionista Tag-Team, Gunn and Coles, still had to "break it down" in case you are a "Cover-Clueless Designer":

A) It's about the CROP: The 3/4 shot (from waist up) Details must be up top.

B) It must POP, amongst all the other magazines, it must grab the shopper's attention.
C) Also, use COLOR! Remember it is an April Issue; No Black and stay away from PRINTS.

D) It needs to be EYE-CATCHING CONFIDENT and SEXY.

With that in mind, the contestants went to work, sketching their ideas and Mood shopping. And then, back to the Parsons Workroom to create the dress that Heidi Klum would love and show off for the Marie Claire April cover.Good Cover= Color, 3/4 Shot and Detailing up top: Done, done and done.

Runway day and the judges, including Miss Coles, were ready for a "Cover Smackdown". As each of the designer's looks came down the runway, I had an uncontrolled urge to shout: Did Any of You Listen???!!!! I was actually having flashbacks to my "Barbie Challenge" when I remember looking over at what the other designers were doing and thought "Did these kids LISTEN to what the challenge was and who we were dressing for?"

More on who didn't listen later...but for now, let's start with the ones who did:

Emilio Sosa: He designed a fire-red silk jersey mini dress (very mini!) with bustier and ribbon detail. He got the color (check!), the "3/4 Shot" detail (check!) and it was certainly sexy (check!). At least he listened. Client and Challenge over "Designer Ego".
It was very Azzadine Alaia (see above on Mariah Carey and Victoria Beckham) and not necessarily Emilio's Carolina Herrea-esque aesthetic, but it worked...for this challenge.

Another one I liked was Ben Chmura's color-blocked design. Now this is the way to show color blocking (take a lesson Mila). He used eye-catching royal blue, canary yellow and black; patching them in a bold sexy yet elegant design (that peek-a-boo back was fabulous!). I could have easily seen Heidi wear this on the cover of Marie Claire.
But the winner this week was Miss Anthony Williams. Yes, it was "Southern Belle's" night. I was (happily) shocked he didn't make some "Housewives of Atlanta Hot Prom Mess" and in fact, had it in him to design a directional, modern dress that was still sexy (check!), full of great color (check!) and would grab the attention of a bored Supermarket shopper (check!). Kudos for listening, Miss Anthony.

Now...Who Didn't Listen:
Mila Hermanovski: Ok, what is that color? It is BEIGEY-NUDE?? How does BLAND beigey-nude fit in with the guidelines described by Joanna Coles? It doesn't. I know that Mila wants to let the viewers and judges know that color blocking/mitering is her "thing". But why not pick CONTRASTING colors (like Ben did)? A cover needs to catch my eye at the newsstand, not make me fall asleep. Her seaming detail--with questionable construction, got lost with such boring colors.

Jonathan Peters' little silk romper was fun and flirty, for sure. But was it for a Heidi Klum cover of Marie Claire? Not so much. With those kimono-like batwing sleeves and knotted belt, it was more ROBE than cover-look ensemble. People would think Heidi Klum was just getting out of bed and looking for her Dannon Light and Fit breakfast Yogurt .Maya Luz also somehow did not hear Joanna when she said "USE COLOR!!!". What happened to these contestants. Seriously. Only THREE out of the twelve used eye-popping Cover appropriate color! The neckline organza collar was great, but I just wished she would have not chosen PUTTY and BEIGE! Was there a Mood Fabrics Sale on these colors that week?I had higher hopes for Amy Sarabi (currently, my personal favorite to win the whole thing). Her "Designer Ego" took over and she stopped paying attention to who she was designing for. Why a print? Didn't Joanna say "stay away from prints", in not so many words. Yet, Amy goes for a print. It was a really interesting dress but maybe had too much going on for a cover look.I saved the worst for last. Mousy Anna Lynette must have had her Ipod headphones on when they were at the Hearst Building. Shorts? A loose vest? An even looser camisole? Is Heidi going to shoot a Marie Claire Cover or go shopping at the Malibu Country Mart? And not to mention, these pieces I can pick up at my local Forever 21. They're cute but NOT for a Heidi Klum Cover. With that, Anna was out this week. Hope these kids learned their lesson. Next time: Listen to the Challenge, Know Who Your Client is, and don't let your Designer Ego override what and who you are designing for.

Echo Park Fashion: Nick Verreos Attends Haute Olive Bash

Echo Park HAUTE!
Last week--before all the crazy Golden Globe Awards madness---I was invited to my beautiful friend Amara Wilson's Birthday Bash at her chic little Vintage Boutique in Echo Park, Haute Olive.Birthday Kisses: Nick Verreos and Amara Wilson, Haute Olive

So of course, I had to show up--gift in tow (Olive-based beauty products) of course (never come empty handed!). Amara was working a strapless bubblegum pink bustier and the most Olivia Newton-John "Grease" stretch skinny pants I have ever seen. They fit her PERFECTLY, by the way. Lucky her!The party was in full swing once I got there (finding easy parking is not like it used to be in Echo Park!) with all of Amara's and Haute Olive's friends sipping Champagne, doing some shopping and even dancing to the DJ's Retro disco-soul tunes.Party Scene: Amara Wilson's Birthday at Haute Olive, Echo Park

I have known Miss Amara for over 8 years, ever since I picked her at a runway show casting. She had just arrived back from Paris and was on her way to making a name for herself here on the West Coast. Ever since then, she has "stuck with me" for life! Not only did she become my fit model--or as I called her "My House Model/Muse", she opened and/or closed a lot of my shows--including my first Smashbox Los Angeles Fashion Week show back in 2003.Miss Amara was also my "Good Luck Charm". I brought Amara to the LA casting of Season 2 of Project Runway one fateful weekend A LONG TIME AGO! She wore the printed silk "butterfly winged" gown shown above as I stood in front of Tim Gunn to await their decision. Needless to say, I was "In"--Thanks Amara!

Haute Olive Chic: A pouf-sleeve iridescent satin bolero at Haute Olive Boutique

Amara now runs a fabulous little vintage store in Echo Park (Los Angeles), where she collects and sells the best 70's jersey wrap dresses, printed caftans that would make Mrs. Roper blush; as well as Lacroix-worthy cropped bolero jackets. Haute Olive, by the way, also carries Menswear, ranging from Member's Only jackets, Vintage Tees to Western Shirts that both a Silverlake hipster or a Oil Can Harry's line dancin' boy would love.

You're The One That I Want: Birthday Girl Amara Wilson, Haute Olive Boutique

Just when you think that you've been to every vintage store this side of the Mississippi, think again: You must check out Haute Olive! Happy Birthday Miss Amara! And keep working those Olivia Newton-John skinny pants! Love ya!

Nick Verreos Casting Dish: Project Runway Season 7 Casting Videos...even more!

Baby Seals and an Ode to Courreges?Heidi and Tim Giving It To You: Season 7 Project Runway

Continuing with my Casting Behind-The-Scenes Blog--here are two more designers that will be part of Season 7 of Project Runway and also came through the day I was lucky enough to have been a judge at the Los Angeles Casting. We did the castings on Memorial Day (back in May '09) at the W Westwood and there was a big ol' pool party occurring. I joked with Tim Gunn that he should have brought his swim trunks. Needless to say, we never made it to the pool. It was work work work, kids...

Mila Hermanovski:
My memory was definitely refreshed when I saw Mila in her casting video. Several months back, I got a call from someone who was styling my friend and client Carrie Ann Inaba with her on-air wardrobe for Dancing With The Stars (in the past we had worked directly with Carrie Ann or her assistant). Mila arrived at our studio and pulled several of my gowns to fit on her and we spent about an hour discussing how to start a design business, all the stuff I am doing and dressing celebs, as well as being in Downtown LA.
Obviously, I did not realize that she was on the show (remember, those castings took place 8 months ago), but she NEVER mentioned anything the entire time (about the fact that she was on the new season or that I was her casting judge) she was at our studio. I assume that she was probably too scared to say anything (Good Job Lifetime Lawyers!). Who knows.
Onto her casting interview: I thought Mila's designs were cute and retro--very Courreges-meets-Pierre Cardin (look them up kiddies) with a touch of Narciso Rodriguez. I liked the seaming and construction. She could be a "quiet storm" on this season.

Jesus Estrada:
Jesus was quite interesting. At first glance he reminded me of one of my fashion design students from my FIDM classes: Young, "fashiony-looking", confident, and a bit bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, as they say. When we asked to have a closer inspection of his garments, we were shocked: One of the collars was BABY SEAL!!!! Well, as you know Tim Gunn is a PETA GOD, so he almost THREW him out of the castings--to be banished to some poor sweat shop. I just couldn't believe he was showing this to us. And when we questioned him on the OH-SO-WRONG choice of using that material, he looked as if we were speaking a foreign language. Crazy. But something in the rest of his non-baby-seal collared garments intrigued us so we led him to the next round--with a warning: NO MORE BABY SEALS!!!!

Judging Buddies: Nick Verreos, Marie Claire's Zoe Glassner and Tim Gunn, LA Castings Season 7 Project Runway

When I first saw the new batch of Project Runway "kids", I thought I knew NONE of them. Or shall I say, no one looked "familiar". Then I began watching these casting videos and realized that I was actually there when many of them came to the casting in Los Angeles and we ended up moving them to the next level! You see, we did these castings so long ago--almost a year ago. I had to "refresh" my memory by viewing these casting videos to remember who these contestants were. Here, I continue with my "Casting Inside Dish":

Christiane King:
After viewing the casting video, I totally remembered Christiane. She had a lovely presence and nice humble aura (no, I-want-to-be-a-Star-I'm-a-Diva attitude). She had tried for Project Runway several times before and obviously was not giving up! I remember that she was originally from Cote D'Ivoire (misspelled in the MyLifetime site btw). The only question we had with her involved fit and a "taste issue". I foresee the latter as maybe being her Achilles Heel. I liked her royal blue architectural shift dress but the rest were a bit, well, Miss Guyana at the Miss World Pageant gown...

Jay Nicolas Sario:
I remember Jay Nicolas, he was a stand-out FOR SURE! His designs were new, modern, fresh and the fit was spot-on. We all loved it. There was a lot of work and a definite eye for detail. I'm not sure if he can replicate all that work within the restricted Project Runway time frame, but who knows. I am excited to see his creations this season. Definitely a favorite for the final "tableau", at least from what he showed us at the casting.

Nick Verreos Dishes on Project Runway Season 7 Casting Videos

Project Runway is BAAAACK!!!!!OK, let us breathe a sigh of relief and joy: Project Runway is BACK!!! As many of you may know by now, Season 7 Project Runway is debuting this week (Thursday night of course!) and someone was either reading my BLOG or... they realized it was the 21st Century and Project Runway needed to be in HD!!! (hello???). I am so excited the show is back and (SIGH) it will not be in Los Angeles anymore at my fabulous Fashion Institute of Design and Merchadising/FIDM campus (yes, all those LA-haters can be happy that it's back in the Big Apple). We can rest assured that Michael Kors and Nina Garcia's contracts got signed--all the T's and the I's were crossed--and yes, they will be seated in those judges seats every week.
I was honored to have been asked to judge the Los Angeles castings of Season 7 at the chic W Hotel , along with Tim Gunn and Marie Claire's Zoe Glassner. Here are a couple of the first "Casting" videos of the new Season 7 Contestants and my thoughts (as best I can remember):

Amy Sarabi:
We were all instantly fascinated by Amy. If I remember correctly, she was from the San Francisco Bay Area and she worked in the Gap Design Team. Her designs were as far from Gap as one could get! I loved her construction, her ruffled and pleated bolero jackets. The garments she brought in were flawlessly made and oh-so-directional. To me, she was a Stand-out. Should be a front-runner.

Anna Lynett:
Anna's designs were sublime and had a "quiet" elegance about them, if I remember. Her designs didn't scream, they whispered. It is hard to tell in this casting video, but her garments were actually really nice and made us "stand-up" and take notice (I'm sure you guys are like "All I see is a lot of boring gray!"). Her demeanor was very sweet--she might get "eaten up" by the "Reality Show" machine however...

Stay tuned for more of my Season 7 Casting Nick Verreos Memory Lane...
