Nick Verreos on Style Network's "Style Star": Renee Zellweger and Anne Hathaway

Renee and Anne: Hollywood Style Muses!!!

Nick & Renee: Nick Verreos on Style Network's "Style Star: Renee Zellweger and Anne Hathaway"

This Oscars Weekend (on Saturday night to be exact) a new "Style Star" episode of which I am one of the featured style experts--premiered on the Style Network. This time around, the Style DIVAS were actresses Renee Zellweger and Anne Hathaway--yes, Miss Anne, co-host of Sunday's 83rd Academy Awards!! (how timely!).

Polished to perfection, Renee and Anne have perfected their always-flawless fashion sense and dress to impress with clean lines and classic silhouettes. These two ladies know their fashion, are Sample Size perfect and well, have become muses for fashion designers and some fashionistas alike...

Of course, we discussed Renne Zellweger in this stunning Vintage Jean Dessès yellow silk chiffon strapless gown which really put her "On the Red Carpet Map" at the Oscars back in 2001 and also discussed...

Her "Muse" relationship with Venezuelan-born/American Designer Carolina Herrrera.

And then there's Miss Anne Hathaway. Ever since 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada", she has become THE Fashion Girl. Haute Couture should be her two middle names! Armani Prive? (above) Check. Versace Atelier? Check...

Marchesa? (above) Check. Valentino Haute Couture? Check. And, as we saw last night at the Oscars, she continued her tradition of being THE girl to Dress if you are a Fashion Designer: She changed a dress every 23.875 minutes. We love you Miss Anne!!!

*In case you missed the episode, it airs again Tuesday March 1st 8AM... *Click HERE for all other airing times and dates.

83rd Annual Academy Awards: Who Wore What? The 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party--Part 2!!

More Vanity Fair Fashion: The Divas, the Lace/See-Through No-No's, and Miss Rita Wilson, my New Fashion Best Girlfriend!

Lets start with the Divas!

Diva No. 1 Socialite Lynn Wyatt--One word: WOW! Class Epitomized. The creme white silk crepe column gown with long sleeves, the mint-green shawl, the clutch, the STATEMENT Necklace!!!! You know, when all the fashion insiders say "It's All About A Statement Necklace", Mrs. Wyatt SHOWS THEM huney what a REAL Statement necklace needs to look like!!! And here's a shocker of all shockers (not really): I bet you A LOT of money that she DOES NOT even have a STYLIST! It's all HER...They don't make Ladies like they use to.

Diva No. 2 Carolina Herrera, wearing her own design naturally. White silk duchess one shoulder gown with side pockets and black bow accent. Simply Stunning! This Venezuelan-born Diva also can teach an actress or two how to really dress. It helps that A) She's a Designer, and B) She literally GREW up watching her mother have private fittings in Paris with Couturiers such as Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Dior back in the 1950's. Finally, I especially love that she posed with her hand in the pocket. This is NOT the "First Time at the Red Carpet Rodeo" for Mrs. Herrera.

Diva No. 3 Joan Collins: Joan Collins can do no wrong in my book! Is it a bit "kooky"? Yes, but does she still OWN it and WORK it? TOTALLY!!! She was On-Trend with the lilac color in the embroidered rosette details and the gown fits her well (great open neckline for her!). The perfect earrings and perfect clutch finish the look. She is OLD SCHOOL Hollywood and I love it!

And Now to Some Lace/See Through No-No Divas:

See Through No-No Number 1--Madonna: Now, I KNOW it was COLD last night! About 50 Degrees in fact. So why oh why would Madonna wear a see-through lace dress with the HIGHEST of slits over a corset and under-panty. And she throws a fur mini "chubby" as if that's going to help. I'm sure this was all Dolce & Gabbana, but I may be wrong (it sure looks it!). I know it's Madonna and she can basically can do whatever she wants. But why am I still perplexed by this? She does have THE BODY of Death, but...sometimes, covered up is actually SEXIER.

See-Though No-No Number 2: Naomi Watts--What, in the name of the Fashion Gods, is this? Why is their a nude-colored piece in her stomach/upper chest? And are those off-white feathers in the back? I just don't even get it.

See Though No-No Number Trois: Jessica Szhor in a Leather, see-though, sequined midriff, nude mini. Really? Those four things NEVER enter my Fashion Vocabulary TOGETHER!!! Do these women have full-length mirrors? Or have they forgotten to pay their electric bills so they can't see themselves before leaving the house? And if so, then WHO is lying to them? Seriously WHO???

THIS...Is How You Do Lace & Nude Ladies:
Take Note (Ladies Above): Camila Alves got it right! Here she is with her sexy husband, Matthew McConaughey in this black lace over nude gown and looking elegant, sexy and GORGEOUS! I also love that she did an "outfit change" (of course she did) from her Academy Awards Red Carpet Kaufman Franco black ball gown (which I LOVED!!!).

Printed Gals:

Cameron Diaz: Love me some Cameron Diaz. Love. But not so much in this very mini Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2011 one-shoulder ruffled neckline cocktail dress. The original sample is actually knee-length and maybe it should have stayed that way. Or just made it about 2 inches longer. That's all it needed to be. With her mile-long legs, the mini...was, well, too mini unfortunately.

Ladies Don't Try This Look At Home: Rita Wilson--The multi-printed satin dress, the feathered (!) purse, the necklace, the bracelet, the strappy heels, the heavy-banged Bouffant 'do: Oh Miss Rita! It's "Valley of The Dolls", the Vanity Fair Oscars Party Version. It's a mess, but here's a surprise: To me, it's a GOOD MESS. Why, you may ask? Anybody who attempts this outfit at a party MUST be a HOOT!!!! If I spotted a woman at a party (at the Open Bar, I am sure!) dressed like this, she would be the first person I would talk to! You just KNOW someone who has enough chutzpah to do this, must be fun!

83rd Annual Academy Awards: Who Wore What? 2011 Vanity Fair Oscars Party Part 1!!

A-List Bash Fashion:

Smoldering Blue Velvet: Tom Ford in his own design (of course)--Seriously: PERFECTION!!!

The 83rd Academy Awards wasn't the only "Red Carpet Game In Town" kids. Last night, of course, there were also the Parties! And the "Daddy" of all Oscar parties was the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscars bash held at Sunset Tower in West Hollywood. The fashions at these parties can sometimes be more entertaining than what you would have seen at the actual Academy Awards. Top actors, celebs, designers, agents and everyone A-List (who gets invited of course) vie for an invitation and when they get it, well, its time to don their finest. Some actresses did full-on gowns, some did cocktail...

Let's take a look at some who were A-List enough to be invited to the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscars Party and what they wore:

Kate Beckinsale: Kate looks AMAZING in this all-over sequined black gown featuring see-through chiffon sleeve insets. The black clutch and simple-yet-elegant diamond drop earrings finish off her look perfectly.

Emma Roberts: I love this dark silver-gray deep v-neck Jenny Packham gown with sleeves (a Red Carpet Trend kids) and "sunburst" paillette sequin detail.

Ginnifer Goodwin: Love the hair, love the dress, love the entire look! She is definitely "On Trend" with this black lace-and-red satin cocktail dress. She's kind of vibing "Young Hollywood Spanish Contessa". Chic and seemingly effortless; and perfect for a cocktail party.

Lourdes Leon: Remind me again, is she FOURTEEN years old? On a good note: I think Madonna's lovely daughter looks soooo pretty: Love the hair and flawless make-up. But... she looks 26!! And that sequined mini tank dress? And stacked pumps? Maybe the "Dressing Up Rules for Tweens" have changed and I somehow didn't get the "Uncle Nick: Catch Up!" memo, but...I sure hope fourteen year old girls all over the US don't start dressing like 26 year old women. Just sayin'

Speaking of 14 year olds! Hailee Steinfeld was one of the best dressed of the night in her Custom Marchesa tulle confection. The tea length dress was absolutely a perfect choice for this beautiful young actress and I LOVED that for the Vanity Fair party she traded her heels in for Red Converse Sneakers!! Now this is how I like my 14 year olds...the world is right!

Charlize Theron: Charlize looked so beautiful in this one-shoulder Atelier Versace gown. It was simple enough to almost be considered "Cocktail Party Appropriate" but yet elegant enough to be a Certified Red Carpet Stunner. The slicked hair, simple clutch and keep-it-light-on-the-jewelry look was modern. Bravo Miss Charlize!

Taylor Swift: Another "Fashion Homerun" goes to Taylor Swift. Perfect length, perfect color, on trend with the all-over sequins as well as the hair, make-up and open-toe gold shoes. Note to Miss Taylor: Keep It Up!!!

Emma Stone: Emma showed up to the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party wearing Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2009. Yep, you read right: Chanel Haute Couture!!! I liked this dress when I first saw it 2 years ago on the Runway and I still like it now. BTW: That's a $40,000+ dress darlings (if she were to actually have bought it). Chanel lent it to her for a Party and NOT an actual televised Award Show. It's official: the Red Carpet Dressing Game has DEFINITELY Changed!!!

Mausam, Ra.1, Game, Desi Boys, Rockstar, Ready for T-Series

T Series is without doubt India's No. 1 music company and is unmatched when it comes to music quality and nurturing new talent. Being the largest record-label in the country, T-Series has one of the most extensive distribution networks across all entertainment verticals globally and had inked music deals with major corporates.

No wonder then that the music company helmed by India's youngest music mogul Bhushan Kumar is adding more feathers to its already overcrowded cap.

The latest additions to the kitty are Game -- an action film directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani starring Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Sarah-Jane Dias, Boman Irani, and Jimmy Shergill, Ra.1 -- a science-fiction superhero film directed by Anubhav Sinha, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Desi Boys starring Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Chitrangadha Singh, Rockstar, directed by Imtiaz Ali, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, Salman Khan-starrer Ready produced by Bhushan Kumar, and the much-awaited Mausam, written and directed by Pankaj Kapoor starring Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Pankaj Kapoor himself among others.

Says Ajay Kapoor, Director, T Series, "After the acquisition of the best of front-liner films, the acquisition of Mausam is another step in the right direction for T Series." Here is looking forward to more such acquisitions from India's No 1 music company.

"Ranbir-Ayan film is definitely on..." - Karan Johar

The media has been going hammer and tongs reporting the fallout between Karan Johar and Ranbir Kapoor, soon after two prominent actresses spoke about Ranbir on Karan's popular TV show. Reportedly, Ranbir's father, Rishi Kapoor, was furious and had decided to disassociate from Karan's Dharma Productions. A section of the media even went to the extent of stating that the episode had put the Ranbir - Ayan Mukerji project in jeopardy, which was to be produced by Karan.

Karan refused to issue any statement on this raging controversy. Even Ranbir maintained a stoic silence, neither confirming nor denying if he would star in the Ayan Mukerji-directed project produced by Karan. However, the truth is, the project is very much on, very much happening. "I didn't need to clarify or offer explanations," Karan tells me, "The fact is Ayan's project will take off soon after Ranbir completes BARFI. Ayan and Ranbir are family... there's no truth to those rumors." Meanwhile, Karan is all set to announce a slew of new projects in the forthcoming weeks. Watch this space!

"SRK gave me the canvas I wanted" - Roshan Abbas

Radio Jockey. Television host. Theatre person. Roshan Abbas is wearing a new hat these days, that of a director. For those unaware of what Roshan has been up to, well, he's giving finishing touches to his directorial debut - ALWAYS KABHI KABHI - which is produced by none other than the superstar himself, Shah Rukh Khan. Surprisingly, the project in question doesn't star SRK in the lead, but four new faces - Satyajeet Dubey, Aly Fazal, Giselli Monteiro and Zoa Morani.

It all began while a show in Dubai, featuring SRK and hosted by Roshan, got delayed. "We got talking. He asked me what I was doing and I replied that I was planning to start a film on teens, with freshers enacting pivotal parts. It didn't require the presence of big stars, but it did require a big production house to back it. We met again in India, had our round of discussions on the project and he stepped forward to produce it." Prior to that, Roshan was in preliminary talks with Ritesh Sidhwani and also with the people at Studio 18, but as luck would have it, Roshan's directorial debut was destined to be produced by SRK.

ALWAYS KABHI KABHI is based on Roshan's 1999 play 'Graffiti'. "But it took time to develop it into a full-fledged screenplay. Shah Rukh pointed out two things. One, cinema and play are two different mediums and the written material had to be more cinematic. Two, it had to be contemporary. Also, I'd like to clarify, though the film revolves around teens, it's not inspired by 'Archie'. It actually borrows from real life experiences," Roshan divulges.

Did SRK offer suggestions, give inputs, recommend actors? "But he never imposed his ideas/suggestions," he interrupts, "He'd say, this is what I feel about a particular thing/issue/person, it's up to you to accept it. He gave me the freedom to make the movie I had envisioned and visualized at the outset. He gave me the canvas I wanted," he adds. Was it tough giving shape to his dream? "Not really! Initially, I wondered, will I get the grammar right? Will the cinematographer translate my vision on celluloid? But it wasn't tough. All you need is the right atmosphere to translate your ideas on celluloid," Roshan reveals.

Roshan's dream will unfold on the big screen on 17 June this year. "I have truly enjoyed the experience of making ALWAYS KABHI KABHI. And I wish to continue chasing my dream," he smiles. We're equally sure Roshan, you will have many interesting stories to tell in times to come.

Emergent notices ordered to govt and media in Ranjitha case

The Karnataka High Court ordered emergent notice to the government and the media in connection with a petition filed by Tamil actress Ranjitha challenging the telecast of a video clipping "depicting" her and self-styled godman Nityananda in an obscene act.

Justice B S Patil, who heard the matter, ordered an injunction to 40 news organisations including print and electronic media. An emergent notice has also been ordered.

In her petition, Ranjitha submitted that the video clipping telecast on March 2 last year was digitally manipulated.

She said she was petrified by the operation of TV channels and news organisations, which, she alleged, were telecasting the manipulated clipping of her and Nityananda.

She submitted that most of the programmes aired on Indian televisions "are not original, but copy of programmes aired in the US, which do not require any check and censorship in view of the culture there (US)".

Ranjitha, who was present during the proceedings, said the respondents were taking advantage of censorship and exploiting viewers and petitioners in general by not adopting any measures to curb prevention of any such telecast "which proves that the acts of the said respondents is illegal and unwarranted for".

Ranjitha's counsel Ravi Varma Kumar said respondents had "crossed all borders of obscenity" and such screening will affect sensitivity and emotions of people.

"Action of the respondents is in violation of provisions of law of land as per Information Technology Act 2000 and Indecent Representation of Women Prohibition Act 1986," Kumar submitted and sought a direction to prohibit the telecast of the clipping.

Ranjitha also sought a direction to Information and Broadcasting Ministry to restrain the respondents from telecasting obscene clippings and using any image, statements, reference and news pictures or articles of "scandalous intent".

Aishwarya Rai Sparkles At Oscars, Shimmer Rules Red Carpet

Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai added some Indian glamour to the Oscars with an on-trend shimmery number at the 83rd Academy Awards where sequins dominated the red carpet.

The 37-year-old actress sparkled in a bronze Giorgio Armani Prive gown with rows of amber sequins and beaded detail at the waist, while husband Abhishek Bachchan stuck to a traditional black tuxedo.

The actress teamed the shimmery gown with a Jimmy Choo clutch, vintage jewellery and smoky eyes.

Like Abhishek, musician A R Rahman who walked the red carpet with wife Saira, too wore a tuxedo while his partner chose a flamboyant fusion ensemble consisting of a golden sherwani and cigarette pants.

Like Saira and Ash, the shimmer trend was followed by Gwnyeth Paltrow, who wore a gold Calvin Klein number and Halle Berry who stole the show in a nude sparkling number by Marchesa.

Hilary Swank's glistening silver Gucci column gave way to a romantic ostrich feather skirt, while the sparkling bodice of Mandy Moore's romantic Monique L'Hullier dress appeared to have been sprayed on.

Shimmering nude was also an age-appropriate choice for 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, nominated for her role in True Grit, who won a Fifties-style dress by Marchesa.

While Celine Dion, wore a full-sleeved silver column dress, Amy Adams added a pop of colour to the red carpet with a sequined navy gown by L'Wren Scott, which she teamed with green accessories.

Other than the sparkle, another major trend was the resurgence of the red carpet favourite, voluminous red gowns.

The bustled creations worn by Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Hudson, and Sandra Bullock, were in the same traffic-stopping hue of red. Penelope Cruz too showed off her post-pregnancy bod with a sequined red gown by L'Wren Scott.

And while black remained a popular choice, with famously eccentric British star Helena Bonham Carter opting for it, there were some surprises from Cate Blanchett who wore an lavender Givenchy Haute Couture gown with yellow embellishment, and an unusual purple-burgundy hue seen on both Natalie Portman, in Rodarte, and Scarlett Johansson in Dolce and Gabbana.

WB CM's 'daughter' arrested

Cops nab impostor who duped Mishra family of Rs 2.8 crore from a hotel yesterday

Jogeshwari-based Mishra family, which was duped of Rs 2.8 crore by a girl claiming to be the estranged daughter of West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, found some comfort on Sunday with the news that the impostor had been nabbed. The Amboli police yesterday arrested the 28-year-old from a hotel in Andheri.

MiD DAY had reported ('Deceived of Rs 2.8 crore by WB CM's Daughter', February 5) about how the Mishras a family of four had rented their flat in Malad to Parimeeta Bhattacharya and how, over the course of a year, lent her lump sums against bogus documents and bank papers she showed them.

She duped the family of nearly Rs 2.8 crore which includes their ancestral property, family jewels, house, fixed deposits, insurance, and so on. The well-to-do Mishras are almost bankrupt now, they claim, because of the so-called CM's daughter.

Sanjeev Mishra, son of Kailash and Usha, said, "We lost all our valuables, property, jewellery, near about everything. We are happy that she has been caught and hope to get justice now."

Bhattacharya stayed in the rented house for nearly three years starting 2007 and she defrauded the family over the course of the last year of her stay, by ingratiating herself and impressing them with her spurious credentials.

"She showed us many documents like income tax orders, pan cards, demand drafts, and we believed them to be authentic. She kept taking money from my whole family, coming up with genuine-sounding excuses every time," said Usha.

They had lodged a complaint with Economic Offences Wing, who had then transferred it to the local police station.

And after trying to trace her for two weeks, cops finally caught up with her at the hotel. They revealed that the Mishra family is not the only one that she has led down the garden path she has accepted that she cozened two others to the tune of a few lakhs. Details are not known as police officials refused to share them.

Rajendra Kane, investigating officer, Amboli police station, said, "We arrested the girl on Sunday from a hotel and are investigating the case." She will be in police custody until March 5.

Shhh! Don't Tell Anyone (Especially in Hollywood) This Has Been Black History Month

Today marks the end of another Black History Month in the United States. It's again been time to recognize the contributions of African Americans in the building, defending and maintaining the country. It is also a time to reflect on the historic victories against repression and oppression earned by Black Americans during their long struggles for freedom and equality.

Among the areas where positive strides have been made is film. African Americans have come to enjoy greater participation and more positive portrayals in movies over the past 50 years. For far too long Blacks were shut out of the film industry except to play minor roles as maids, porters and all too often buffoons.

Now Hollywood's A List of stars includes important Black performers such as Denzel Washington, Halle Berry and Will Smith. Oscars for acting in both lead and supporting roles have gone to a number of African Americans over the past dozen years.

The times they have changed.

But hardly enough.

Quick, name some films this past year that dealt with issues particular to the Black experience. How many of the nominees for this year's Academy Awards, in acting categories, were black? Answer: none.

This mirrors what is happening within the country as a whole. The US has its first African American president, many of our greatest athletes and entertainers are black and society frowns on anything hinting at racism in public speech or deed. On the surface, all seems well. But as I noted in a recent post, the lot African Americans in general, those not endowed with natural athletic or perfroming talents, is at its lowest point in decades. Progress has ground to a halt. In the US today a Black male of college age is statistically more likely to be in prison than in a dorm.

Most troubling is the fact that this phenomenon is not part of our national discourse.

It is sometimes difficult to tell whether Hollywood is reflecting our culture or influencing it. In either case there has been virtually no serious films about the Black experience since Do the Right Thing (1989) and Boyz n the Hood (1991). Last year's Precious did receive widespread critical acclaim but it was also mocked by many white critics who evidently prefer minstrel shows to dramas featuring lower class African Americans.

I began pondering all this the other day when I saw the trailer for a documentary examining Hollywood's depiction of the Holocaust. In it Steven Spielberg actually had the cheek to say that Hollywood has veritably ignored the Holocaust.

Come again?

How about his own Schindler's List (1993)? The Pianist (2002)? The Pawnbroker (1964)? Sophie's Choice (1982)? The Boy in Striped Pajamas (2008)? Life is Beautiful? To name a few.

Now let's look at the long list of films that show slavery in America.....

All right, how about Reconstruction?

Okay, how about films dealing with the Jim Crow Era in the South?

And let's not leave out the countless films on the Civil Rights movement.....

Sadly there is virtually nothing in these categories. To his credit Spielberg directed Amistad (1997) which deals with the slave revolt of the same name. But it principally focuses on their court trials. Then there's the excellent Glory (1989) which looked at the all black 54th massachusetts regiment during the Civil War.

There are no recent films examining the Nat Turner Rebellion, the Underground Railroad or Frederick Douglass. WEB Dubois, Roy Wilkins or the Little Rock Nine all have stories that could easily be adopted to the screen. (To their credit HBO has recently presented a film on Thurgood Marshall, Thurgood.) In more recent times the works of community activits and organizers who have not gone on to the presidency could make for dramatic film stories. Instead I imagine we'll be seeing more Tyler Perry comedies replete with flatulating big mamas who remind some of the Uncle Tom and Aunt Jemima characters of old.

America and Hollywood have come a long way since the dark days of segregation. But the difference between a long way and job finished are great indeed.
